The Social Democratic Party (SDP), Osun state chapter has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to begin his war on corruption by probing Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s administration for alleged financial recklessness.
The party in a statement yesterday, June 2, said the probe of the administration by the president will give an indication that he is serious in his determination to fight corruption, according to Punch.
It alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in Osun had misappropriated N350bn allocated to the state from the federation account, adding that the “Osun people need to know how the over N43.6 bn of Internally generated revenue, the over N400bn loans and the N60bn bond were used by Aregbesola’s government”.
It accused the governor of inflating the cost of contracts for the purpose of diverting funds. Citing the case of new schools built by the government at the cost of N750m and N1.1bn, it said that upon investigation, it found out that it will take less than N250m to complete each of the buildings.
Another case the party cited is the tablets learning scheme of the administration known as Opon Imo, which the party alleged was marred in fraud.
“Morally, is it good for the governor to run the state as a family company? Where are the 150,000 Opon-Imo tablets Aregbesola said will be provided for all students of secondary schools in the state? We doubt if there are 2,000 Opon-Imo tablets in the state today,” the party queried.
SDP said President Muhammadu Buhari would be shocked at the level of financial recklessness in Osun state if a thorough investigation was carried out.
Reacting to the allegations by SPD, the Osun state government in a statement accused the opposition party of employing cheap blackmail to discredit the government. It said the people of Osun state were well aware of the achievements recorded by the Aregbesola administration.
