3,000 Abuja Commercial Sex Workers Land In Trouble

The Special Task Force on City Cleaning and Management in the Federal Capital Territory, has arrested no fewer than three thousand commercial s ex workers in the last 90 days in Abuja.

This was disclosed in a statement by the assistant director/chief press secretary (FCT), Muhammad Sule, yesterday, The Nation reports.

According to him, Mr. John Chukwu, the FCT permanent secretary made it known after a meeting with the Chairman of the task team and the FCT police commissioner, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu, in Abuja.

Chukwu said: “In addition, eight illegal sand dredging and quarry sites; 205 shanties; 89 illegal markets; seven illegal car marts and 98 food vendors kiosk and furniture workshops – all located in unauthorised places within the city – have been closed down.

“Similarly, 2,534 street hawkers and beggars have been arrested by the FCT Administration, and 102 stray animals were removed from illegal cattle markets in Gudu and other parts of the city during the same period.”

The s ex workers have been handed over to Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) for prosecution and subsequent rehabilitation.

Chukwu called on the task team to put more effort into ridding Abuja of all environmental nuisance, stressing that it’s not business as usual.

In April, a non-governmental organization, Civil Society for HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, assisted by World Bank and the State Action Committee on HIV/Aids, launched an unusual project. They planned to empower 154 s ex workers in Gombe state to discourage them from prostitution.
